Women Of The Hour is Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut. However, Kendrick has stated that she’s not in it for the money. In fact, the actress is using the film to make a difference.
Women of the Hour Cast
Women Of The Hour is a true story.
It follows an actress who encounters a serial killer in the 1970s. The film is about her encounter with serial killer Rodney Alcala, who murdered eight people between 1971 and 1979. Kendrick plays the actress Cheryl Bradshaw, who meets Alcala on a dating television show set.
However, Kendrick stated that the film is about Alcala’s victims, not his crimes. “It is really meant to be the story of the impact that he [Alcala] had on the people that were unfortunate enough to come across him, so the aim was always really to center the women’s stories,” Kendrick explains in an interview as outlined on BBC.
Women of the Hour Netflix
The film is currently streaming on Netflix, which reportedly spent eleven million dollars on the film, and is now the number one streamed movie on the platform. However, Kendrick states that she’s not in it for the money. She explains in an interview, “I was just making the movie… and then it was like, oh, there’s money going to be exchanging hands. And I asked myself the question of, do you feel gross about this? And I did. And so, yeah, I’m not making money off of the movie.”
Anna Kendrick
Kendrick uses her directorial debut to tackle serious issues. The actress usually stars in comedies and musicals but makes a bold move out of those genres. In addition, the Pitch Perfect star has donated the film’s profits to Rainn (the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and the National Centre for Victims of Crime.
The film also raises some ethical questions about people’s fascination with true crime. In the last few years, audiences have become obsessed with true crime. In an interview with the host of the Crime Junkie AF podcast, Kendrick states ” “we’re both steeped in some really valid ethical questions around true crime”.
