In this clip from Season 3 of the Netflix series, Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) shares his feelings with Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan) in which the duo goes from friends to lovers. The carriage scene sees the pair moving forward with an intimate relationship after sharing a kiss in a previous episode.

“Was that intentional?” Coughlan asks Newton in the interview clip, referring to the viral finger placement. “Yeah,” he answers. If you’re unfamiliar with the steamy scene, the duo engage in intimate acts in the carriage following Colin professing his feelings for Penelope. During the ride, Colin is being intimate with Penelope and once the carriage stops, Colin uses his last two fingers to fix Penelope’s dress before they exit and he asks her to marry him.

So, why is Colin’s finger placement significant? Well, commenters seem to have figured out the alleged theory.

As a result, since Colin was intimate with Penelope, he used the fingers that were not in use to fix her dress before the pair exited the carriage.
