Start With Understanding Your Child’s Hair

For many parents, caring for afro, coily, and kinky hair can feel overwhelming at first — especially if your child has a different hair texture than you, or were just never taught you how growing up. The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Understanding your child’s hair texture, moisture needs, and a simple detangling routine are the three biggest game changers when it comes to making hair care easy and less stressful. Once those pieces click, hair days begin to feel far more manageable for both you and your child.

At Niya’s Coily World, families can explore beginner-friendly hair care education, confidence-building resources, and tools designed specifically for textured hair. Parents can also take our quick 2-minute Hair Profile Quiz to better understand what their child’s hair type means for their hair care routine.

Use Stories and Tools to Shape Positive Hair Memories

A child’s relationship with their hair often starts much earlier than we think. The books they read, the language they hear during wash day, and even the tools they use can all shape how they feel about their curls and coils over time.

For many kids, seeing a character who looks like them confidently embracing their natural hair can be incredibly powerful. In fact, children retain up to 80% of what they see through visual storytelling, making representation an important part of building confidence early.

Even small things can help make hair days feel more positive and exciting. Whether it’s reading Niya’s First Swim, using a fun Crown Mist Spray Bottle during detangling time, or attaching a Niya Key Charm to their backpack, these little touchpoints can help children associate hair care with confidence, self-expression, and pride instead of frustration or stress.

Make Hair Care Feel Fun, Not Frustrating

Children learn best through play, visual storytelling, and routine. That’s why making hair care feel exciting instead of stressful can completely change the experience. Through animated adventures, kids can watch Niya — a hair-care hero — guide them through simple routines while teaching confidence and self-love along the way. These fun, feel-good episodes help make natural hair feel normal, exciting, and something kids can truly embrace. You can check out the adventures on the Niya’s Coily World YouTube Channel.

Keep the Routine Simple and Consistent

When it comes to afro textured hair, consistency matters more than having dozens of products. A simple routine using moisture, gentle detangling, and protective styling can go a long way. Most importantly, children should feel included in the process so they begin building confidence and independence with their own hair care journey.

Rethink What “Good Hair” Looks Like

My own relationship with my natural hair honestly didn’t begin until my late-20s. Like many Black girls, I grew up getting chemical relaxers and eventually forgot what my natural texture even looked like. Then came the rise of the natural hair movement on YouTube. Suddenly, women were sharing wash days, curl routines, braid-outs, and embracing textures that, for so long, many of us were taught to hide or “manage.”

I became completely inspired. Around that same time, I also started becoming more comfortable wearing braids publicly and professionally, something I had honestly never done in the workplace before. That confidence shift changed everything for me. Instead of relaxing my hair again, I decided to grow out my natural hair and see what would happen.

I was obsessed with trying to figure out what my curl pattern would look like. The anticipation honestly killed me. I remember digging through old baby pictures hoping to get a clue, secretly wishing for loose curls. But when my natural texture finally grew in, I realized my hair was actually much more coily — a tighter zig-zag pattern than I expected. And if I’m being honest, I was initially disappointed. There’s so much unspoken texture bias within our own communities, and I realized I had internalized some of that myself.

But something unexpected happened. The more I experimented with natural hairstyles, the more confident I became. My friends, and family were incredibly supportive, and over time I started to truly love the versatility and beauty of my hair. I never went back to relaxers.

That journey became the foundation for Niya’s Coily World, especially the word “Coily.” I wanted children with tighter textures to feel centered, celebrated, and proud from an early age.

At the same time all of this was happening, I was braiding hair on the side and building a clientele of both kids and adults. One thing became impossible to ignore: so many people simply didn’t understand how to care for textured hair. There were so many misconceptions around moisture, trims, breakage, and even basic routines. People thought oil alone created moisture. Parents were struggling. Kids were frustrated. The education piece was missing — not just around choosing the right products, but around hair care literacy.

It was actually my sister who encouraged me to channel all of these experiences and observations into a children’s book. That one idea eventually evolved into Niya’s Coily World — a platform dedicated to making hair care education fun and empowering for the next generation. Watch our Story on CTV.
