The Flash‘ had an extremely disappointing opening weekend exposing the serious financial struggles both Warner Brothers Discovery and the DC Comics brand are currently facing. ‘The Flash’ was set to release June 16th going into Father’s Day against box office hit ‘Across The Spiderverse’ in its 3rd weekend. It’s safe to say that the film did not make the splash it intended. According to Box Office Mojo, ‘The Flash‘ was estimated to open at around $70 million dollars in the domestic (U.S) box office. Instead, it brought in around $20 million dollars less, making only $50.1 million dollars in its domestic release. This is the second lowest opening for any DC film since ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods” which made $30 million dollars its opening weekend.

This may seem like a lot of money, but for a major franchise like The DC Extended Universe (DCEU), this is a major flop. Especially since their main competitor is The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which is owned by Disney. According to Box Office Mojo, the MCU has become the most successful franchise of all time, despite controversy with its actors. With 13 films making over one billion dollars and one, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, shortly becoming the most successful film of all time, nearly reaching two billion dollars.

No DCEU film has ever reached half a billion dollars. The franchise’s highest-grossing film is ‘Wonder Woman’, making “$412.5 million” dollars worldwide. This means Warner Brothers Discovery, the company that owns the DCEU franchise, is in serious financial trouble. Shortly after the release of ‘The Flash’ Warner Brothers Discovery’s stock dropped with shares falling nearly “2% to $12.58“. This follows other financial disasters within the company like the cancelation of the film ‘Batgirl’, after the film had finished filming and editing, for tax breaks and another unexpected DCEU flop from ‘Black Adam’ starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
