The video claims that UMG has a ton of popular artists such as; Kanye West, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Eminem, Drake, Justin Bieber, and more.

Allegedly, UMG’s current deal with TikTok expires, and in their negotiations for a new deal and renewal, UMG has reportedly been trying to ask for proper compensation for their artists.

UMG is basically saying that TikTok is “not paying fair value for their music” as the TikTok notes.

TikTok also responded with their own statement in regards to this news.

What it Means

This related TikTok video posted by user @butthatsmyopinion claims that by the end of January, nearly all of the most popular songs on TikTok will be removed. TikTok and Universal Music Group previously had a deal where they could incorporate these songs into TikTok. However, that deal expired and UMG and TikTok did not decide on a renewal.

An agreement hasn’t allegedly been reached because UMG claimed that TikTok is pressing them on issues such as; appropriate compensation, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of AI, and online safety for TikTok users. If a deal isn’t made between the pair this could be a huge “double-edged sword” for both parties as the TikToker claims. TikTok is known for having popular music and if UMG doesn’t have its music on TikTok it has become one of the most popular ways for new artists to get popular and go viral. Popular artists also seemingly skyrocket on the app if featured.

What do you think of this popular music being removed from the app?
