Lady Gaga sent shockwaves across the internet back in March when she uploaded a turtleneck-heavy picture of her and Adam Driver amidst a snowy mountaintop background; nearly as breathtaking as the pair. The on-set photo, captured in Gressoney in the Italian Alps, was taken from the upcoming Ridley Scott-directed House of Gucci film.

The first trailer was released last month and displayed a mix of chic-meets-crime boasting an impressive cast of talent. Inspired by the 2001 book by Sara Gay Forden: The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed., House of Gucci has been floating around Hollywood since 2006. Now that we have our first look, here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming film.

What’s The Story?

House of Gucci recounts a sombre chapter in fashion history rife with abundance and betrayal. An exuberant Italian socialite by the name of Patrizia Reggiani married Maurizio Gucci: the grandson of the founder of the Italian fashion house Guccio Gucci. Maurizio was a wide-eyed 20-year-old when they tied the knot, and the pair would go on to seize control of the Gucci name after a high-profile battle. Reggiani was no ordinary Italian housewife, she had a taste for luxury and reportedly spent thousands on orchids alone at the apex of her spending. Maurizio fled to Florence to permanently take a secret lover in the mid-’80s, and a couple of years after he split with his misses he was forced to sell the company for $190 million due to his incompetence. Finally, in 1995 Maurizio was murdered outside the lobby of his Italian office, and his ex-wife would earn a 26-year prison sentence for her involvement in the tragedy.

Star Power

Lady Gaga takes on her first role since her critically acclaimed performance in 2018’s A Star Is Born as the Italian diva Patrizia Reggiani. Adam Driver plays Maurizio: the heir to the Gucci throne alongside some other Hollywood heavyweights such as Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons who portray different members of the Gucci family. Jared Leto makes an appearance as an older heavyset Italian man thanks to some convincing prosthetics.

Wardrobe

A polished wardrobe is an obvious essential for a film portraying arguably the most influential fashion house of all time. Thankfully, the current head of Gucci Marco Bizzari allowed the production “total creative freedom”, granting the cast complete access to the fashion houses archives for props and wardrobe. How Does Gucci Feel About the Film

Despite the anticipation from filmgoers and fashion lovers, the actual Italian family is not pleased with the silver screen adaptation of a low point for the family. The second cousin of the late Maurizio, Patrizia Gucci had nothing positive to say about the film. She spoke to Associated Press in April and claimed: “We are truly disappointed.… They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system…. Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything, but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.
