September 30, 2024– After a long and strenuous battle, outlets such as Yahoo! have reported that Dikembe Mutombo has passed. He died from brain cancer.

The finger-wagging legend led a career that touched many both on and off the court.

During his extensive career in the NBA, Mutombo blocked a total of 3,289 shots (Second only to Hakeem Olajuwon). He is famously reported on his statement to GQ saying, “I would shake my head and tell the people, ‘Man cannot fly in the house of Mutombo.”

Aside from his success in the league, Mutombo never forgot where he came from. the Congo native devoted a great deal to his humanitarian work in the DRC where his mission was to improve the overall quality of life throughout his country.

Basketball Without Borders

In 2009, Mutombo was named the first global NBA ambassador where he worked to teach basketball in 33 different countries. He was also known for devoting much of his time to youth basketball programs where he would impart his wisdom to the younger generation.

During a live Twitter chat, he told young leaders of Africa, “You cannot succeed in life if you don’t know how to work with people, just like you cannot win a game without your teammates.”
